 Churchill's War
Winston Spencer Churchill became Great Britain's Prime Minister on 10th May 1940 after the country had finally lost faith in the great appeaser, Neville Chamberlain - the German invasion of the Lowland countries the final straw for a population now under constant threat of tyranny. Now the people demanded a strong leader and chose the charismatic, cigar smoking Churchill.
With unique footage this film examines his strong reserveand indomitable strength as he resolves to "go it alone" against Hitler. This programme traces Churchill's genius, his long held belief in the importance of "intelligence", of knowing his enemy, and his cunning and superb diplomatic skills which would eventually result in the defeat of Nazism.
It tells the real story of his involvement in Dunkirk, as a moral Victory was grabbed from the hands of seemingly inevitable defeat, and of his continual efforts to try persuade the wary Americans into the war, long before the events of Pearl harbour, which his " intelligence " had undoubtedly forseen.
With Hitler finally turning on his one time ally Stalin - and with the creation of the Eastern Front - this film tells the true story of how Churchill took his place "at the top table", among the World's two great would-be super-powers, and of the shaky and strained relationship they had. This landmark film contains interviews with those who were affected by him in the military, and those who knew him intimately. This will be a lasting tribute and commemoration to the man who defined "their finest hour", and perhaps that famous epitaph, said proudly under clear again skies late in 1940's should be rewritten:
