History of the Royal Marines 1755-1914

There are three volumes in this series written by General Sir H E Blumberg tracing the history of the Royal Marines from 1755 as the war clouds from France were gathering over Britain, until the outbreak of the Great War.

The image to the left is an account from the Battle of Trafalgar from volume 2 of the series. Victory opened fire at 12.50 p.m., soon after eight Marines on her poop were killed by a double headed shot. Lord Nelson ordered Capatain C.W. Adair to disperse his men round the ship to minimise the losses. When Lord Nelson was wounded, Marines helped to carry him to the cockpit. Captain Adair was soon after killed in repulsing an attempt by the Redoubtable to board the Victory, he was struck by a musket ball in the back of his neck while standing on the gangway encouraging his men.

Marines List January 1834

The Marines, or The Navy's soldiers, have since earliest times been a vital part of the Navy's manpower. It has been the custom to list every officer in the marines whether on active service or waiting as a reserve (and hence on half pay) complete with pay scale details. This CD gives a fascinating insight into the world of the Marines and is Invaluable to those searching for geneological information on members of their family who were known to be in this branch of the armed forces early in the nineteenth century.

Berkshire and The War

Berkshire and the War is a unique record of a county's contribution to the First World War. Compiled between 1915 and 1919 it includes photographs and articles first published in the Reading Standard as well as retrospective accounts written especially for this publication. Around 9000 men are recorded, mainly from the Royal Berkshire Regiment and the Berkshire Yeomanry. However, men from Berkshire served in almost every unit of the British military and so almost all the regiments and corps of the army are represented as are units of the Royal Marines and ships of the Royal Navy. The contribution of civilians to the war effort is not ignored. There are images of civic functions in aid of the war effort, details of nurses and hospitals and of the ambulance services, and summaries of their achievements during the war. The original publication was not indexed. This series of five CD-ROM's is indexed by name, regiment and place. It is an essential source of information for family and military historians and for those who want to study the conflict with an emphasis on Berkshire. Each CD-ROM contains an index of all five volumes in the series.

The above image is the cover of the first issue, dated August 12th, 1914.
