This fascinating DVD chronicles the story of the First World War, utilising original archive footage from the Imperial War Museum. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in June 1914 lit the flames of a savage, bloody conflict that engulfed Europe and eventually, the world. The Forst World War ranged Britain and her Allies against the Central powers in a conflict so vast it became referred to as 'The Great War'.
With both sides bogged down in the trench warfare of the Western Front, the focus shifted to the East and the Tragedy of Gallipoli in 1915 - then back to France, where the following year's battle of the somme saw Kitchener's Army decimated with the loss of over 400,000 lives. After further bloodshed, notably at Passchendaclke in 1917, America's assistance and increasing Allied technological advancement hastened the end of a war which cost at least 9 million lives.
