The Portsmouth Guide 1822 This Portsmouth Guide, published by Hollingsworth (of the “Promenade Rooms, Southsea Beach”) is an extremely detailed description of the town, made easier to read by the adoption of the letter “s” throughout rather than the previously used “f”. A comprehensive history of the area, starting with the Saxon Chronicles of AD 501 makes up half of the publication, the remainder being a description of the architectural and social structure of the town and its adjacent areas. Details of the local stagecoach timetables are given as are the times of local ship sailings and the “Fine Weather Fares” (193 images) Click here to view product thumbnail images (new window) Table of Contents Title Page Preface Contents The Portsmouth Guide Preliminary Remarks, the Island of Portsea, &c The Town and Port of Portsmouth The Fortifications of Portsmouth The Town of Portsea, &c The Suburbs, Southsea, the Baths, Rides, Drives, &c Gosport, Haslar Hospital, &c The Dock Yard, Gun Wharf, Harbour, Spithead, &c The Borough of Portesmouth The Royal and Imperial Visit in 1814 Portchester Castle, &c The Isle of Wight Appendix Directory Portsmouth Directory Portsea Directory Gosport Directory General Index Academy, Royal, Dock Yard Academy for Naval Architecture Admiralty, Officers of Aldermen of Portsmouth Alms Houses Alverstoke Attorneys and Solicitors Bankers Barrack Masters Bathing Rooms Beneficial Society, Hall of Bible Society, Officers of Block-House Fort Borough of Portesmouth Borough, Officers of Borough Castle Boyne, burning of HMS Buckingham, monument of Duke of Burgesses of Portesmouth Canal, Portsmouth and London Census of Portsmouth Census of Portsmouth, Portsea and Gosport Census of Portsea Census of Gosport and Alverstoke Chapel, Garrison Chapel, Methodist Chapel, St. George's Chapel, St. John's Chapel, Independent Chapel, Wesleyan Chapel, Catholic Charitable Institutions, Societies, &c Alms Houses Free Grammar School Portsmouth Institution Royal Humane Society Naval and Military Bible Society Ladies' Benevolent Society Charles I., Bust of Charles II, Marriage of Charles II, Marriage Register of Church of St. Thomas Church of St. Paul's Church, Kingston Coaches College, Royal Naval, Dock Yard Consuls Corporation of Portesmouth Cosham Cumberland Fort Custom House Custom House, Officers &c. of Dock Yard Dock Yard, Officers of, previous to redution Dock Yard, present establishment of Excise, Officers &c. of Explosion of Gunpowder on the Point Explosion of Gunpowder at Southsea Castle Eye Infirmary, South Hants Fairs Florimond and Aurelia Fort Monkton Fortifications of Portsmouth Fortifications of Portsea Forton, Village of Forton, Prison at Gaol, Portsmouth Garrison, Officers &c. of Gas Light Establishment Gatcombe George III., Statue of Gosport, Town of Gun Wharf, the Gun Wharf, Officers of Half way-houses Hanway, Jonas.
