Portsmouth Dockyard 1900-1920 A Photographic History
FROST, Mark Edwin Pescott, O.B.E., I.S.O. (1859-1953). Born in Southsea 2nd October 1859. His father was also Mark Edwin Frost. He joined the Admiralty service at Portsmouth in 1874 and, following periods at the Admiralty and in Hong Kong, was made Secretary to the Admiral Superintendent of Portsmouth Dockyard in 1899. He served under nine different Admirals-Superintendent before his retirement in 1921.Before even this period of service began, Mr. Frost showed the beginnings of his life-long interest in the history of Portsmouth by starting (in 1887) to collect newspaper cuttings on local history. By 1951 he had created sixteen scrapbook volumes of the History of Portsmouth. In 1901 he began his collection of photographs of events in Portsmouth Dockyard. Pictures taken by local photographers, notably by Stephen Cribb of Southsea, were eventually assembled into seven albums of photographs, which are now known as the Pescott Frost Dockyard Photographs. The collection includes pictures of the launches of several major warships, such as that of H.M.S. Dreadnought in 1906, visits by foreign warships, French, American, Japanese and Russian, and visits by foreign heads of state, who would arrive by ship and transfer directly to a train waiting at the South Railway Jetty. The Kaiser, for example, was photographed here in 1907. There are also pictures of garden parties and of Mr. Frost himself and his children. It was Mr. Frost who founded the Dockyard Museum in 1906. This was one of the ancestors of the present Royal Naval Museum. The History of Portsmouth and the Pescott Frost Dockyard Photographs are kept at Portsmouth Central Library in the Historical Collections.
