Horses played an important role in the First World War, this image from 1917, shows the British Army in Boulogne with a horse being unloaded from a ship held by a sling. It was reported on August 26th 1917 that over twenty thousand horses had already been landed in France during the opening month of the war, including staff-officers' mounts, cavalry horses, artillery horses, and military train horses.
