Early on the morning of August 28th, 1914, our Grand Fleet undertook a concerted opration of some consequence against the Germans in Heligoland Bight. The First Light Cruiser Squadron sank the German light cruiser "Mainz", which carried twelve 4.1 inch, four 2.1 inch, four machine guns, and had two eighteen inch torpedo tubes. It is believed that Senior-Lieutenant Von Tirpitz, a son of Grand Admiral Von Tirpitz, was amongst the officers on board. This photograph, and many more First World War battleship photographs can be found on The Illustrated War News Volume 2 September 1914 CD-ROM, please note that the image shown is of lower resolution and quality than the image on the CD-ROM.
